Four and two in a row for Ong Zhe Sim and Ethan Kuan as National Junior Champions

(l-r) Ong Zhe Sim and Ethan Kuan

History from last year repeated as the pair of Ong Zhe Sim and Ethan Kuan bagged the Girls and Boys’ main event – the Under-19s, at the ONCOCARE National Junior Squash Championships 2025. For Ong, this is also her fourth consecutive title, having won since 2022. The pair also won the Under-17 categories to make it a double.

Ong, who has been winning the main event since 2022, was dominant the entire event as she did not drop a single game en route to her title. The 16-year old, who just completed her O Level examination, was playing with much confidence in the Girls’ Under-19 final and never allowed her opponent Vicky Lai to settle into the match in a repeat of last year’s final. Having played the Girls’ Under-17 final earlier, she was clinical from the start and dropped just 15 points.

In the day before, Ong took out surprise package Jacintha Han, who had earlier upset the joint-third seed Saiesha Ranjan in five games. At only 13 years old, Han could potentially follow the footsteps on Ong in the coming years.

“I feel very happy that I’m the champion in both categories (for) four years in a row and I hope that in the coming years, I can still perform well and win the titles”, Ong said after her match.

Ong also added that she has put in a lot of training coming into the event, knowing she is playing two events, which her body would need to endure.

In an earlier match, Ong beat Jayna Lim in the Girls’ Under-17 final.

Front row: (l-r) Kaelen Low (BU13), Chua Yi Cheng (BU11), Ethan Yong (BU9), Lum Yui Yee (GU11) Back row: Naisha Singh (GU15), Kelihla Cheong (GU13), Ong Zhe Sim (GU17,19), Ethan Kuan (BU17,19), Rehaan Singh (BU15)

In the Boys’ Under-19, Ethan Kuan shrugged off a scrappy start where he found the tin too many times, before coming back to win 3-1 against Rehaan Singh. The pair, who are both left-handed and attend school at ACS Independent, put up a display befitting the finale of the event to a packed gallery. Kuan was in control for most of the time, but the retrieval skills of Singh ensured that the crowd was treated to some highly exciting rallies.

At the post-match interview, Ethan said, “After winning the Under-17 and 19 titles, I am quite happy. Performance-wise was not what I expected it to be, but nevertheless I’m still grateful for the results and thankful for those who helped me along the way.”

In the Boys’ Under-17 final, Kuan beat Shiv Kaul.

In other age groups, twins Naisha and Rehaan Singh took top honours in the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-15 categories to make it a family double. Kaelen Low won the Boys’ Under-13, while Kelihla Cheong was a first time winner when she won the Girls’Under-13 after top seed Kareena Sashikumar pulled out unwell. The Boys’ Under-11 also had a first time winner when Chua Yi Cheng edged Mason Han, while Lim Yui Yee upset the books to beat top seed Naomi Ng in the Girls’ Under-11 final.

For the first time, the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-9 categories were also played in the National Junior Championships, where Ella Luo and Ethan Yong took top honours.

Singapore Squash Rackets Association General Manager added, “We hope that this younger age group at national level event will attract more children to pick up squash. For our pathway development plans, this also means we could possibly have wider and younger pool of players to work with for our high performance plans.”
